A hospital information system (HIS) is an element of health informatics that focuses mainly on the administration needs of the hospitals. The purpose of the hospital information system (HIS) is to manage the information that health professionals need, to perform their jobs effectively and efficiently. In order to make the management run smoothly without any interruptions, the hospital authorities just need to install the hospital information system that comes in the form of a comprehensive software solution

Advantages and Benefits of having a HIS:

There are several benefits of using an IT system to streamline hospital operations

  • Data can be entered into the system at the point of source
  • Timely access and retrieval to patient information and hospital transactions.
  • Easy monitoring of supplies, inventory and medicines.
  • Reduces documentation needs and minimizes the use of paper.
  • Improves turnaround time for hospital procedures dependent on paper-based slips and logbooks.
  • Better audit controls and policy compliance.
  • Avoids errors and track every single detail: Managing hospital is a crucial thing where there is no scope for errors. A manual system can’t assure foolproof and 100% accurate processing. There are possibilities of errors and mistakes. Installing a Hospital management system removes the chance of error completely, and you avoid compliance issues and lawsuits, the two biggest hassles for medical centers and hospitals. Thus, in spite of high investment, it is a good deal. In addition to it, tracking a minute detail of room occupancy, staff availability, and operational information is available at the fingertips.
  • Improved clinical decision-making: A good quality management system makes sure that operational and clinical decision-making process is fast, accurate, and efficient. With an easy, single view availability of data points, doctors, and medical support staff gets facilitated.
Establish your hospital as technically advanced:

When a hospital is managed by new-age hospital management system, it gets established as a techno-savvy and modern medical center. It is highly important in the people rely on computerized systems more than manual ones. It creates a high level of trust in the systems and processes. Also, it is possible to maintain connectivity with patients and peripheral systems if the operations are managed using automated systems.

HM portals are capable of providing a better-concerted environment between hospital staff, doctors, groups, patients and managing workflows

This comprehensive beneficial software has made it really easy for the hospitals to run an uninterrupted service and provide the best health care facilities to their patients every day without any failures.

How to reduce medication errors

Posted at 17:05h in blog by admin. 0 comments 1 like

A medication error is defined as “any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm while the medication is in the control of the health care professional, patient, or consumer.Mistakes involving medications are among the most common healthcare errors. Medication errors lengthen hospital stays, increase inpatient expenses, and sometimes lead to deaths which can be prevented. In a study by the FDA that evaluated reports of fatal medication errors from 1993 to 1998, the most common error involving medications was related to administration of an improper dose of medicine, accounting for about 41% of fatal medication errors.Giving the wrong drug and using the wrong route of administration each accounted for 16% of the errors. Almost half of the fatal medication errors occurred in people over the age of 60. Older people may be at greatest risk for medication errors because they often take multiple prescription medications.Medication errors include prescribing errors, dispensing errors, medication administration errors, and patient compliance errors.

Some of the common causes of Medication Errors
  • Ambiguous strength designation on labels or in packaging
  • Drug product nomenclature (look-alike or sound-alike names, use of lettered or numbered prefixes and suffixes in drug names)
  • Equipment failure or malfunction
  • Illegible handwriting, Improper transcription
  • Inaccurate dosage calculation, Inadequate trained personnel
  • Inappropriate abbreviations used in prescribing
  • Labeling errors, Excessive workload
  • Lapses in individual performance
  • Medication unavailable
Medication errors can be reduced by the following measures
  • One of the biggest contributors to serious medical errors is miscommunication among staff during shift changes. According to the Joint Commission, it causes he majority of serious injuries and deaths from medical errors. Using checklists and other tools to make sure nothing’s missed during handoff conversations is crucial to preventing mistakes.
  • Get pharmacists more directly involved in patient treatment. It’s common for doctors and nurses to make the rounds with patients together. That way, doctors can get direct information about how different drugs may adversely affect patients’ conditions – and which ones they should prescribe instead. Pharmacists may also be able to more easily catch mistakes involving medication, such as ordering the wrong dosage or drug for a patient.
  • Work to reduce infections. Hospital-acquired infections are some of the most dangerous complications patients experience during their hospital stays. To keep germs from spreading, hospitals must be vigilant about following federal guidelines for disinfecting patient rooms, surgical tools, labs and other areas. And facilities must also make sure staff is following best practices for hand hygiene.
  • Avoid diagnostic error. Mistakes with diagnoses don’t just include the wrong diagnosis.Delayed diagnoses, overdiagnosing and partial diagnoses also count, diagnosing patients should involve the entire care team, from physicians to radiologists. If each person uses his or her expertise effectively and isn’t afraid to speak up if he or she sees any inconsistencies, diagnoses will be more accurate.
  • Make electronic health records (EHR) systems more interoperable. Meaningful use requirements will soon change, and they’ll place a bigger focus on ensuring EHR systems from different providers and facilities can communicate with each other to share key health information about patients easily. Hospitals need to work closely with their EHR vendors and IT staff to make sure their system can be updated to meet those requirements down the line.
  • TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP REDUCE MEDICATION ERRORS Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) systems are remarkably effective at reducing the rate ofserious medication errors
